EV Conversion Registration (UK)

The plan with both the OSSEV® and our MX-5e is to get them registered as EVs with the DVLA here in the UK. There is a DVLA online checker to see if a vehicle is registered as electric or not: https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

The DVLA currently use a 'radically altered points system' with the rules defined here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles

Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.

PartPoints
Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer)5
Suspension (front and back) - original2
Axles (both) - original2
Transmission - original2
Steering assembly - original2
Engine - original1

The Process

  1. Send in your V5 log book.
  2. The DVLA will send out a technical inspector to check your conversion.
  3. They are looking for compliance with the 8-point system, at the quality of the conversion and for any safety issues. They will take photos and report back to DVLA.
  4. The DVLA will then make a decision and change fuel type if you are successful.

If you fail in this process, then you are forced to go down the IVA route and this will result in a Q-plate in most cases.

Warning: If you sell an incorrectly register EV conversion then you will be liable. If the car is not correctly registered with the DVLA then your insurance will be invalid.

Best Practice

Cable management is important and new brackets should use the existing mounting points in the car.

MX-5e

With the MX-5e we have chosen a Nissan Leaf motor to maximise the points. The chassis, body shell, sub-frames, Power Plant Frame (PPF) all remain in place and are unmodified. We have retained the original suspension front and rear. We have retained the differential and axles. We have retained the original steering assembly.

We have gained 2 points by modifying the transmission and we have gained 1 point by replacing the engine. This gives us just 3 points under the DVLA rules, allowing us to keep the original registration.
