Seats, Seat Belts & Harnesses

The seat is the primary sensory interface between most of the driver and the car. It has to provide even support and over a wide contact area. We plan to do something fairly radical with the seating in this car but, it is also a going to be a car for all to drive. This means the seats have to be position adjustable and have a tilting back rest. Adjustable lumbar support would also be desirable.

Requirements

  1. Supportive and lightly padded.
  2. Integrated heating.
  3. Both seats will be on runners to support both LHD and RHD EVs.
  4. The back will have tilt adjustment.
  5. Adjustable lumber support.

I've driven quite a few Mazda MX-5s with integrated speakers in the seat and our preference is to not have them as we already plan an extensive audio and entertainment system.

At the end of the day, the OSSEV® has to be a car that the whole family wants to get in and enjoy. This means that the seating has to work for all.

We are aiming for something a bit like this Porsche GT3 RS seat but, with slots for 6-point harnesses, slide mounts, adjustable lumbar support and a back that tilts.

Seat Belts

The standard option will be to use 3-point seat belts as found in most cars. For cost reasons, I'm not considering explosive pre-tensioners in the initial design.

Harnesses

We plan to include mounting points for 6-point harness in the design and these will be an alternative to the standard 3-point seatbelts. Harnesses are less convenient but they are considerably safer and provide a much better connection to the car.

Heated Seats

The seats will feature a system for heating. The cold/warm air system is part of the HVAC system.
