Progress - July 2024

July 1st

The power supply that comes with the Nextbase 522GW dashcam is designed to plug into a cigarette socket. This is of no use to us. We want to leave the existing cigarette socket in place and free for other things. It is permanently connected to the battery, so that we can also wire in a 12V battery charging socket. We have cut the PSU off and wired it directly to a compact and powerful dc-dc converter. To do this, we have cut off one of the two standard USB sockets. The other one is used to power the wireless phone charger (rated at 7W). This dc-dc converter gets its power via the ACC ignition key position, so we can charge a phone, listen to music and also enable the dashcam without starting the MX-5e. The main thing is that all of the wiring is fuse, tidy and out of sight. The forward facing unit is hidden behind the rear view mirror.

July 2nd

We are using these 6-way connectors for both doors. They carry the connections for the speakers, electric windows and central locking. Today's job was to test the new central locking controller and wire it into the wiring loom.

The central locking module is permanently connected to the 12V battery and uses very little current. It is one of the reasons why we have bothered to fit a 12V battery.

July 3rd

More progress today, when the rain allowed. We have wired up the ignition switch and run wires to the doors, speakers and sub-woofer.

July 9th

Hopefully, the final delivery from Vehicle Wiring Products should allow us to complete the MX-5e rewiring project.

July 10th

Rewired the electric windows in the MX-5e.

July 12th

I know it may not look like it but, we on on the final part of the MX-5e rewiring project. It is taking a lot longer than planned but, it is totally worth it. We have a much tidier and lighter wiring loom that only supports the features that we require. It will be much more reliable than the butchered loom that was in place before and is fully documented and will be very easy to diagnose, should the need arise. We have added many new features and functions to, which are needed in an EV.

July 24th

We have a new electric roller shutter garage door. This will make life easier as it gives us a bit more room in the garage and we can gain access even if another car is parked in front of the door.

July 28th

We received some upgraded hardware from Inductive Autoworks today, for the reduction gearbox. It is an oil catch tank and breather, which they think might be needed as the internals of the box spin at around 11,000rpm. It weighs 700g.

July 31st

Trimmed the bottom of the radiator/fans shroud/mount today, so that we could trial fit the undertray. We also added cut outs for the silicon hoses. The undertray doesn't help much on Yoko but, it will play a bigger part in keeping the engine bay dry and clean in the MX-5e.
